The shoes activity was a huge hit with my class, a cross curricular winner. In math we charted, averaged, multiplied decimals, divided decimals, etc. in order to figure the quantities of shoes being thrown in the trash. In writer's workshop they wrote an explanatory and persuasive piece both explaining what the problem is and then they researched possible solutions and had to persuade the reader to respond/think differently about shoes. In reading we spent several weeks on non-fiction text on global warming issues. In computer we searched web sites for global warming and hunted for ways to deal with "shoes." In social studies we discussed third world countries, labor issues and unfair/lax laws that allow big countries to come in.
